Have you ever noticed that we typically listen to the music that matches our mood? When we’re feeling good, we want more upbeat songs. When we’re feeling sad and low, the song will often match. I think it’s safe to say that most of us use music as a release of emotion; it confirms how we’re feeling. Boppy tunes confirm that I’m feeling more positive about life. Depressing songs confirm that I feel like a pile of shit.

As you can imagine, I’ve accumulated quite the song collection since Zoey has died, with music to suit days when I can feel the sunshine to times when I’m in the darkest hole possible. These songs have accompanied me while I’ve driven around aimlessly, unsure where I was headed. They’ve muffled my crying in the shower, one of the few places I could really release my devastation without scaring my living children. They’ve sung to me in meditation, trying to quiet my mind from all that is running through it. They’ve comforted my soul, assuring me that one day I will rise again.

Have a listen, add some to your own playlist. There is a whole mashup of genres here, to suit every style, every need, every preference. Some don’t even make sense in terms of relating to grief, but there was something in their tune that drew me in. There are some that I would sing along to while I was pregnant with Zoey, and others that were sung to her by hospital volunteers. There’s even a few that have even been playing on the radio, at the exact time I needed them, as if by divine intervention. I sing them to Zoey, I sing them to myself, I sing them to God. And while several of the songs are clearly more love based, the tune and overall feel, perhaps even some of the lyrics, still apply to grief. After all, grief is just immense love with no place to go and no one to go to. Enjoy.
